Gathering the data
To create the scenario, synthetic population, a couple of data sources must be collected. It is best to start with an empty folder that can be located anywhere in your file system. In the following, the folder will be denoted as /data. All downloaded data sets need to be put into specific sub-directories. The following paragraphs describe this process.
Tip
Mixing code and data: Often, when people clone the eqasim repository, they see the data folder and put the data sets there. This is not the intended procedure: the cloned repository only contains the processing code that should be separated from where the data is located. See Running the pipeline for a common project directory structure.
Tip
Have a look at the download script below to automatically download the required data.
1) Census data (RP 2022)

Download the data set in parquet format by clicking the link under Individus localisés au canton-ou-ville.
Copy the parquet file into the folder
data/rp_2022
2) Population totals (RP 2022)
We also make use of more aggregated population totals available from INSEE:
Download the data for France hors Mayotte in csv format.
Copy the zip file into the folder
data/rp_2022.
3) Origin-destination data (RP-MOBPRO / RP-MOBSCO 2022)
Origin-destination data is available from INSEE (at two locations):

guarantee that you have exactly the correct format), you should make sure that
the following files are accessible in the folder data/egt_2010:
Menages_semaine.csv, Personnes_semaine.csv, Deplacements_semaine.csv.
Optionally, you may also place the files for Saturdays and Sundays in the folder, they will be detected automatically. However, their content will only be used if the correct weekdays are configured (see later).

Move both parquet files into
data/sirene.
The geolocated enterprise census is available on data.gouv.fr:
Scroll down and click on the blue download button on the right for the following data set:

Overview
Your folder structure should now have at least the following files:

In case you are using the National Person Mobility Survey (EMP) or the Regional household travel survey (EGT), the following files should also be respectively in place:
data/emp_2019/emp_2019_donnees_individuelles_anonymisees_novembre2024.zip
or
data/egt_2010/Menages_semaine.csvdata/egt_2010/Personnes_semaine.csvdata/egt_2010/Deplacements_semaine.csv
Downloading the data automatically
Instead of manually collecting each data set from the sources above, you can use the
automated download script scripts/download.py. This script reads your configuration file
to determine which regions and departments you are working with, identifies all the data
files that are missing from your data_path, and offers to download them automatically.
Note
The script downloads all data sets from their official public URLs and places them into the
correct sub-directories within your data_path. It only downloads files that are not already
present, so you can re-run the script safely without overwriting existing data.
Running the script
# Interactive mode — the script will prompt you for confirmation before each download
python scripts/download.py config.yml
# Non-interactive mode — automatically confirms everything (useful for CI/CD)
python scripts/download.py config.yml --yes
When run, the script will:
Load your configuration file and determine which regions/departments you are targeting.
Check which data files are already present in your
data_path.Display a list of missing files along with their download URLs.
Prompt you for confirmation before downloading.
Download all missing files into the appropriate sub-directories.
Using the cache server
Note
Repeatedly downloading the data can cause some source websites to temporarily rate-limit the downloading address. A cache server is provided to download the files only once from the source websites and then serve them continuously. once and pointing the download script at it, large data files are only fetched
To start the cache server locally:
cd scripts/cache_server
uv run main.py
Then, the location of the server can be provided to the download script
python scripts/download.py config.yml --cache-server http://localhost:8080
